Why are two similar mattresses so widely different in price?
Is it possible that they are not as similar as they seem? Many mattresses appear similar on the outside but are vastly different in terms of their composition, construction and finish. They might both claim to be predominantly of the same construction for example pocket springs but the fillings in the mattress may be different materials, different qualities and different amounts. For example higher quantities of natural fillings will result in the mattress being higher in price but the mattress should also last longer. When comparing like with like products you will need a lot of information to ensure your comparison is accurate.

What should I pay for a good mattress?
Mattresses like most other products vary greatly in price and quality. As a general rule, you get what you pay for. Remember, you spend one third of your life in bed so invest in something that is going to benefit your sleep pattern and general well being rather than your hip pocket.

Do your beds meet all applicable British safety requirements?

Where are your goods manufactured?

What sort of bed should I choose if I have a bad back?
Whilst many people believe that a hard mattress is good for a bad back, research has shown recently that this is not necessarily the case - a hard mattress may actually be detrimental. It is important that a mattress offers the right amount of support and comfort for you. Each person is different and has different requirements ? some of these requirements may be met by a soft or hard mattress and some by mattresses of different compositions. It is also worthwhile noting that references to ?orthopaedic? goods do not necessarily mean that the goods have been professionally or medically assessed. It is a term used loosely by manufacturers.

What sort of bed is best for sufferers from Asthma or other types of allergic problems?
Almost all beds will, in time, attract house dust mites (whether in the mattress, base or the linen). However, the structure of the visco-elastic memory foam makes it impossible for dust mites to penetrate a memory foam mattress. Memory Foam mattresses are allergy free and hypo-allergenic thereby creating a cleaner and healthier sleeping environment. Even with a memory foam mattresses though you must still regularly clean and air the mattress, mattress covers and linen. Most memory foam mattresses also come with a soft, removable and machine washable cover. Many of these covers are made from hypo-allergenic material and are specially treated to eliminate bacteria. Some manufacturers are now using anti-dust mite treated fabrics to further relieve allergies. We suggest you read our "What is memory foam? page to find out more about our memory foam product . If you suffer from allergies you should always check the details of construction and materials used.

Which is better ? tufted or quilted?
It is a personal choice. Quality tufted mattresses are well protected by wool or felt and tufts are dispersed evenly across the surface of the mattress. Tufted mattresses are the most popular option for English customers. Some more sensitive people may be aware of the tufts and should perhaps opt for a quilted style mattress instead. A good mattress protector can assist. The quilted style mattress is more popular in European countries.

I have been told to turn my mattress regularly. Why is this necessary?
On high quality mattresses and particularly those with lots of natural fillings, indentations left by your body are a normal characteristic of a functioning mattress. Indentations occur because the mattress and fillings are working as intended ? the springs are allowed to move individually while the fillings cradle and support your frame. Regularly turning your mattress will help the fillings settle more evenly. There will however, still be some minimal visual signs of the mattress settling to the contours of your body.

When turning your mattress, you should follow the manufacturers? instructions. Generally, a mattress should be turned from end to end and side to side every week for the first few months and then every other month (unless it's a special ?no-turn? mattress which should simply be rotated head to toe). Please be aware that handles are not intended to carry the full weight of a mattress, they are designed to assist you in positioning the mattress on the base. Some mattresses will require 2 people to turn due to their weight and size.

If you are going to have trouble turning your mattress, please contact us to ask about our no-turn mattresses. We can be contacted on sales@absolutebeds.com or by phone on UK Mobile: + 44 (0) 7768 732 031Spanish Land Line: + 34 952 787 916Spanish Mobile: + 34 675 084 580.

Is bed linen freely available for bigger beds?
Most department stores stock linen for larger beds. For sizes that are not readily available there are companies who can make linen to order. We are happy to cater to our customer's needs. Please contact us on sales@absolutebeds.com or by phone on UK Mobile: + 44 (0) 7768 732 031Spanish Land Line: + 34 952 787 916 Spanish Mobile: + 34 675 084 580 to ask about our bed linen sizes.

Do you sell mattresses separately?
Yes, we sell all mattresses, bases, bedframes and divan sets separately. We can supply all sizes and brand names. Made to measure beds and mattresses are also available.

Do you carry stock?
We have thousands of beds, mattresses and bedroom furniture in stock at any time. Please note that stock can fluctuate from day to day. Please call us or visit our showroom for availability of goods in stock and ready to deliver.

Will I notice any difference between rigid and flexible slats?
You are likely to notice a difference between rigid and flexible slats and a difference is intended to be felt. Rigid slats give a bed a firmer feel; they have no give and work against the mattress, leaving the mattress to all the work in response to your body's movements. Flexible slats or sprung slats work with the mattress and will positively affect the durability of the mattress. With flexible slats, comforts levels will be improved and your mattress will have a prolonged life.

My mattress is not the same size as the base?
Initially, you should check that the mattress and base are supposed to be the same size (or have the same dimensions). There are many different sizes on the market so it is important to check not only that the size name is the same but also (and more importantly) that the actual dimensions, in metric and imperial, are a match. Most manufacturers allow a tolerance of 2cm and a mattress should fit comfortably within the frame or on the base without scratching the surface of the frame or base. Please note that European sizes are different to the standard British sizes and American sizes, so it essential that you know the measurements you are after.

If your mattress and base are supposed to have the same dimensions yet the mattress appears smaller than the base, then the reason may be in its construction and storage or transit position. The springs within a spring mattress can sometimes nestle into one another when it is stored vertically, thereby temporarily reducing the length or width. During the mattresses use, it should recover its original dimensions.

Are foam mattresses hot?
It is a common misconception that foam mattresses are hot. Mattresses don?t create the heat; the heat emanates from your body, and people can get hot on beds of all constructions.

Foam is a good insulator and in the early days of foam mattresses heat retention was more of a problem than it is today. Memory foam mattresses are temperature sensitive so they absorb body temperature and disperse it, therefore regulating the heat. Memory foam mattresses are effective in offering the ultimate in support and comfort because of their responsiveness to heat which allows the material to mould to your shape. Many good quality memory foam mattresses are made of material with an open cell structure which will breathe more easily and allow for heat diffusion. Different bed manufacturers however use different foam, so it is important to enquire as to whether your foam mattress has an open cell construction or an air exchange layer. If you tend to get hot in bed you should ensure that your mattress is well ventilated (ie. opt for a slatted base), use cotton sheets and use duvets with a lower tog rating. You can also look out for a memory foam mattress that comes with a cover that is specially designed to control temperature or try a combination mattress made of both springs and memory foam.

The bed appears to have a smell to it ? will it disappear?
All new products have a smell of newness. This can be because of the material the mattress is wrapped in during transit (usually polythene) which may cause the natural fillings used to release an organic odour. The smell will dissipate when the mattress is aired. Memory foam mattresses tend to have a peculiar new foam type of smell that can stay for a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the foam manufacturer. While the smell is not harmful and does not tend to trigger allergies, it can be a bother initially for particularly sensitive people. We suggest that if the smell is unsettling, you should air out the room and wash the sheets after the first couple of nights sleeping on the mattress.

Are you a member of any body or association?
Yes. We are a member of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Sleep Council and National Bed Federation (NBF). So you can buy with confidence and peace of mind.
